It’s impossible to discuss The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo without at least a cursory mention of the earlier Swedish version, but David Fincher does something I might have deemed impossible before seeing his interpretation. Fincher tells the same story in such a different way that it seems fresh and new. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a wonderful achievement with mystery narrative of highest cinematic standard.

The Descendants

Alexander Payne’s trademark mixture of drama and dark comedy is perfectly at home in this story of a faithful husband who discovers his wife’s infidelity when she’s lying on her deathbed. Sharp writing, top-notch acting (as many as four performers – George Clooney, Robert Forster, Judy Greer, and Shailene Woodley – could be considered Oscar contenders), and a strong emotional catharsis makes this a memorable motion picture.

The Tree of Life

Not only is The Tree of Life a beautifully assembled picture, but it’s one that can spark lengthy post theater discussions. It’s unlikely that a similar statement could be made about any of the other films available during the 2011 period. Brad Pitt and Sean Penn are excellent in this movie. This is a fine, emotionally rich, character-based tale. Robert Browning once wrote that “a man’s reach should exceed his grasp.” With The Tree of Life, Terrence Malick has taken that to heart.

The Artist

Who would have imagined that one of the best silent films I have seen would be made in 2011, 80 years after the technology was left for dead by the film industry? In silence, there can be beauty. I’d love to say The Artist will convert unbelievers, and it’s hard to believe anyone who sees the film won’t fall in love with it, but the problem may be getting butts into seats. It’s a thing of magic and deserves to be seen by anyone who cares about movies, but it’s a hard sell. Do yourself a favor: forget that it’s silent and in black-and-white, and remember that it’s one of the best films of 2011.

With Hugo, Martin Scorsese has accomplished what few in Hollywood are willing to try: make a movie for adults that arrives without sex, violence, or profanity and earns a PG-rating. It’s a fairy tale for mature viewers, but the airy exterior hides the emotional depth. Hugo is a smart movie, but it also has a heart. Those with a passion for early cinema are likely to adore it.

Revolver by Beatles

Forgive your humble author if he gushes a bit too much in this review, but I’ll just have to make this clear up front. This here album is, BY FAR, my favorite album of all time. PERIOD. The musicianship and production are without fault. The quality and creativity of the songwriting is un-matched. The variety of sounds, lyrical themes, and compositional structure is simply beyond the reach of any other artist/band.

Will you love every song? No.
Will any one of these songs necessarily be your favorite song of all time? No. Is there even a guarantee this will be your favorite album of all time? No. Taken as a whole, though, you will recognize why this album is the finest example of the perfect pop-rock album. It is the archetype. So just get it.

Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen

An argument can easily be made that this is one of the best rock and roll albums of all time. In fact, maybe a viable argument could not even be made against that claim. This is my favorite Springsteen album (but they’re all good, for the most part). It has a lot of his pop hits (“Dancing in the Dark”, “Born In the U.S.A.”), and some more sentimental songs (“Bobby Jean”, “I’m On Fire”). Either way, nearly every song on this album is essential Springsteen.

My love of Metallica’s Master of Puppets album, which has lasted almost two decades now, began on what was a pretty good day for a 15-year-old misfit metalhead, during what was the most miserable time of my life: high school. Even though Master of Puppets didn’t take as gigantic a leap forward as Ride the Lightning, it was the band’s greatest achievement, hailed as a masterpiece by critics far outside heavy metal’s core audience.
